Another month is upon us already; how do the days go by so quickly? March has brought with it some much needed sunshine (peppered with the occasional flurry of snow and rain, of course) and the promise of longer days. As always in Edinburgh, there is plenty to do during March no matter what your interests. In our third installment of A Year of Edinburgh we’ll talk you through everything you should note down in your diaries this month.
Based at the marquee on the Mound, Edinburgh Fashion Week kicked off this weekend with a range of catwalk shows, panel discussions and styling sessions for Scottish fashionistas. We were pleased to see a mix of high street stores and independent boutiques weighing in with their top looks and fashion predictions for the coming months. Although the opening weekend is now over, there are plenty of events, offers and discounts running throughout the rest of Edinburgh Fashion Week. Check out the full schedule and more information over at Edin Events, and don’t forget to follow EdFashion for details of plenty more fashionable events in the capital throughout the year.
This is your city. Come and celebrate it with us.
To mark two years of This Is Edinburgh, the fantastic marketing campaign to promote the city, a two-day city-wide celebration will be happening on 18th and 19th March. As a thank you, This Is Edinburgh are inviting residents to party the night away at Summerhall on the Friday, with live music, DJs, movie screenings, sketching classes, karaoke sessions, street food trucks, gin distillery tours and much more. The following day sees Edinburgh’s Big Brunch taking place, with lots of cafés and restaurants across the city offering special brunch menus for just £5 or £10 per person. To find out more about both events, visit This is Edinburgh to book your tickets and reserve your brunch spot.
Speaking of brunch, March also sees the opening of a new restaurant which we can already predict is going to become one of the most visited places in Newington on a Sunday morning. Southpour opened officially today, but we went along for a sneak preview to try out the brunch menu ahead of the launch. Rustic decor, with just the right mix between industrial cool and homely comfort, provides a very Instagrammable backdrop for the delicious brunch menu which features favourites such as poached eggs and smoked salmon as well as more unusual brunch dishes like sweetcorn nori fritters. Our favourite? Definitely the French toast with bacon and maple syrup!
Towards the end of the month, you can look forward to the launch of the 2016 Edinburgh International Science Festival. Kicking off on the 26th March, this year’s festival programme is themed around “Building Better Worlds” and is packed with events for people of all ages, interests and abilities. We’re particularly looking forward to the GastroFest strand, an exploration of the science of food and drink.
